Each home and family is unique. That is why I am a huge proponent of making a home work FOR YOU! A simple way to do that is through functional beauty.
Once our hallway and linen closet was painted, it looked like a completely different space. It was so fresh and clean looking after a weekend of painting. Like a brand new slate. Now the fun can begin: giving this area functional beauty.
This past week, we added three simple changes that got us one step closer to completion. All of these were small, but important projects that are adding to our ability to use this space. After living here for almost two years, I had a pretty good idea about how this area can best work FOR us.

LINEN CLOSET SHELVES
Last week, I shared the difference a few coats of paint made in the linen closet. But there was one thing that was not completed…until today!
The shelves! To keep the budget low on this $100 room makeover, I am simply reusing the linen closet’s layout. But I wanted to add a little pop of color and the shelves were the obvious choice.
Using leftover paint from our painted staircase, the four shelves now have a little more personality.
{Side note: I did think about painting the entire linen closet green, but there is no light in this closet. It was dark in here even with the previous tan color, so I knew that this green would make it nearly impossible to find something at night.}
SMALL STORAGE SHELF
There was one “odd” idea that kept coming to mind and it was purely for a functional purpose. Because our only full bathroom is right off this landing area, we keep a few items on hand for use out of the bathroom. But those few things always sat on the floor in one of the corners. It was mostly the look of these items having no purpose that bugged me. So why not create functional beauty in this corner? Our home is here to serve us and making it work well for my family is important for me.
James and I found a few pieces of scrap wood in our basement that were the perfect solution.
I have to admit that I got the better end of the project this week. James did most of the “work” and these small storage shelves were no exception.
He cut and hung them.
I just had to stain the wood.
NEW LIGHT FIXTURE
I’m about to embarrass myself here, but the reality is that this is the light fixture that was in our hallway. It’s disgusting. Sorry! I pretty much ignored it since we moved in because I knew it would be replaced.
This light fixture is so much better!
WEEK TWO UPDATE
With these three simple changes, our hallway and linen closet is now ready for some personal touches…and a bunch of organization. Stay tuned because that is coming soon!
