As the season changes to cooler days and nights, my focus shifts to early fall homemaking. Adding cozy touches, all the while enjoying the last bits of lingering summer, helps us make the seasonal transition.
Whether we’re ready for it or not, summer is over and our tank tops and shorts are packed away. Thankfully, the weather change is helped along by some early fall homemaking.
Welcome to “Around the Home Chapter Four,” where I hope you are inspired to look for little ways to love on your home and the people who live there.

BRING THE OUTDOORS INSIDE
As we scramble to clean up our vegetable and flower gardens before the first snowfall, bringing the last bits of color in has been a priority. Even if it means stealing away outside for a few minutes to clip a more zinnias to display indoors.
Little vases are scattered about our home. And that includes on our living room mantel and even a bathroom shelf.

MIX SUMMER AND FALL
Placing a vase of zinnias on an end table and adding a cozy throw blanket to the sofa is the essence of early fall homemaking. Mixing the last bits of summer with the reality of cool fall mornings is a little practical beauty in our home right now.

And when I walk in on this scene, my heart melts a little. These days are full and go by so quickly. That means a boy, a book, his little doggie, and some sunshine makes my heart happy.
LAST OF THE HERB GARDEN
We picked the final parsley from our herb garden window boxes. And I found the one place that I could hang them to dry that wouldn’t be in the way: our homeschool nook!
It only took one week and these were sufficiently dried and added to our kitchen open shelving.

“NEW” BATHROOM SINK
The vintage details in our full bathroom were the tipping point in helping me decide that this was our new home. But once we moved in, it became obvious that the sink had a few problems. The main one being that it leaked around the hot faucet. There was also a lot of rust that needed more work than we currently had time for.
My mom found an almost identical sink in a local online sale page. It was only 15 minutes away, so on a cold winter night, we picked it up. That was over a year and a half ago. James got so busy with our renovation project, that a sink change was way down on the to-do list. Until just a few weeks ago, we made due with an old towel on the floor under the hot faucet.
On a recent Saturday afternoon, where one cast-iron sink was replaced with another. Have you ever carried a cast-iron fixture? Me neither. Ha! This is when having a teenage boy in the house comes in handy. He and James carried the “new” one upstairs and the old one downstairs.
Look! It doesn’t leak!

We had a great summer full of hot days, but now we’re moving into that cozy time of the year. I’m still not sure if I’m “ready” but it looks like it will happen anyway. So, instead, I am looking to embrace it and a few early fall homemaking additions have helped that along.
How are you using any last bits of summer and touches of fall in your home?
