We’ve been buzzing around our house working on some bigger projects {that just can’t seem to get done}. And I was in need of a quick DIY that wouldn’t break the bank. That’s when I spied the dirty and dated dining room chandelier. Between budget and time constraints and…”I don’t even know what I would get brand new for this room.” So I decided to use what I have and give it new life and update my old light fixture.
A quick little before of the old light fixture in our dining room.

You might not be able to tell, but it was tied up with twine so it would sit higher in the room. That had to go…along with the glass globes.
After a thorough cleaning, I was determined to give it new life. That’s when the cheapest DIY light fixture idea came to mind: spray paint!
How to spray paint a light fixture:
- Set the fixture outside on cardboard. Be sure to read the spray paint instructions for the proper weather conditions prior to setting up this project. {We had one day that would be “warmer” and I got all the painting done in one afternoon.}
- You’ll want to cover up the electrical parts inside each bulb base. Tape is the easiest solution to keep paint out of where you don’t want it. You can easily remove the tape when it’s all dry.
- Spray two coats of paint on your light fixture. Allow enough drying time in between coats and then flip it over and spray two coats on the underside.
- Once it has thoroughly dried, hang it back up!
I decided to change out the light bulbs in this chandelier as well. The previous ones were mismatched and…too normal. Due to the size of the light bulb base, a regular size light bulb was needed. (Candle wick type bulbs would not fit in this light fixture.) I decided to get creative and achieve my goal of: pretty…and maybe a little edgy.
After trying out a few bulbs, I settled on a 60-watt Edision bulb that adds a little funk and an unexpected industrial vibe to our dining room.
Friend, this update was so simple and budget-friendly. No one says if you don’t like a light fixture, that you need an entirely new one. Look at what you have a little differently and try something new with it…you just may love it all over again!
