Here it is: that week between Christmas and New Year’s and I always get the itch to organize. My to-do list is long this year and at the top was “organize the coat closet.” I know, I already set it up earlier this month. But true life confession: it was a disaster only a week later. We’ve been struggling to find what we need in there and it was a bit frustrating to all of us.
So, I pulled everything out and was just about to set it all back up inside the closet when I realized: the pink spot where the toilet used to be really irked me. Wait, what? A toilet? Yep. Missed that little tid bit of information? {click HERE.}

Back to the pink paint. I knew that there was extra of the wall color left in the basement by the previous owners. But…I don’t like the color. There I said it. I didn’t want a teal-ish coat closet anymore. And so, I checked my paint stash and found a gallon of white paint leftover from our farmhouse. We’re going to call this closet a homage to Little by Little Farmhouse.
Up next was the issue of winter hat/gloves/mitten/scarves storage. You know, all the necessary things for life in New York. The space is tight at the entrance to our coat closet and the actual closet is…well, it’s a normal small coat closet. That meant that I needed to be creative in using the surfaces that I did have.
First, I was contemplating reusing the canvas totes from our farmhouse mud room makeover {click HERE} but they stuck out way too far in the closet. That’s when I saw all the “dead space” on the walls. I had the perfect solution for a small space, as well as creating a quick and easy way for my kids to grab what they needed.
Have I ever mentioned how much I love efficiency? And functionality? I am a problem-solver and if a “system” isn’t working, I love to figure out what will work.
A quick few supplies and I was ready to pull this coat closet makeover off.
Here is what you’ll need for this hat and glove hanging system:
*Curtain rods (go for the cheap ones!)
*Spray paint (optional)
I purchased the curtain rods in a nickle/silver sheen. It was a bit cheaper than the black ones and I knew that I could achieve the black look by simply spray painting them.
The curtain rod hardware was easily installed.
I slid the clip rings onto the curtain rod, clipped on the winter gear, and it was done!
The scarves are simply draped over the coat rod, but if I need that space to hang more coats, we can easily add some hooks to the other wall.
Oh, wait! Before we close…you just know that I had to give that little light an update too. You know, while I had my spray paint out. I decided to ditch the sconce and carry over the industrial look from our dining room chandelier. {click HERE}

Well, I’m off to tackle a few more things on that post-Christmas to do list. How about you? Do you get the urge to clean up and organize as the New Year approaches?
