A cozy tween boy bedroom can be accomplished with just a few key items that can fit into any budget. After painting this room, it was time to bring back in the furniture and begin to make it feel like a room my son would want to hang out in.

The last time I shared this tween boy bedroom, it was was recently painted. It felt like an entirely new room with a fresh coat of paint. However, it was missing any and all signs of coziness. Since we had just thrown his room together when we moved in, there were some key items that I wanted to focus on replacing.
〈TWEEN BOY BEDROOM BEFORE & PAINTING MAKEOVER〉
It was fun to work with him on this room. To be honest, he really only cared about the rug. And even that was only minimal. I did take his personality into consideration, as well as the fact that he is moving into a new season in life. My goal was a room that will grow with him. The new items that we added need to be “cool” even when he’s 16.
HOW TO CREATE A COZY TWEEN BOY BEDROOM
Using a small budget, I focused on making this room feel cozy by adding a few key items such as a rug, window treatments, and changing out the bedding. After all of that, his nightstand deserved a fresh coat of paint as well.
BEDROOM MAKEOVER BEFORE
Let’s take a quick peek at two before pics. One is definitely a before and the other was after the room was painted.

ADDING A RUG
I was able to sell the gray shag rug on a local site and find one online that my son and I both liked. {This rug is 7’9″ x 10′}
NEW BEDDING
With a new rug making the room feel more “grounded,” I decided to change the position of his bed. It felt like it had been shoved in a corner. Let’s be honest: it was. But a bed in the corner gave him more floor space to play. But I was seeing that he wasn’t using the floor as much, so I tried this out. Turns out that he loves that his bed was moved out and away from the wall.
To keep his room from feeling too full of creams and grays, a pop of green was added with a new comforter. Plus, it was time to retire the sports themed comforter that was a hand me down from his big brother.
Oh and getting a twin extra long comforter was an amazing solution as it fits the bed so much better and allows plenty to hang off the end.
WINDOW TREATMENTS
For a few specific reasons, we added three different window coverings to this cozy tween boy bedroom. The first is linen Roman shades. I used these same ones in our laundry room and they’ve worked great. His bedroom gets a ton of sunshine in the summer, which is nice. But having a Roman shade to pull down will help a little when the heat of the day shines in. The other purpose of these is for privacy. The windows in his room line up with the neighbor’s windows and this will allow him privacy, but still allow light into his room.
To stay in budget, I ended up ordering curtain rods online that were mismatched in color. I spray painted them all black and now they match! It is a double blackout rod that allows for two sets of curtains. What you can’t see are navy blue blackout curtains hidden behind dropcloth curtains. It’s been a great solution to darken his room at night without having to look at those dark curtains during the day.
NIGHTSTAND UPDATE
I hadn’t realized what a beating this nightstand had taken over the past few years. After digging around in my paint supplies, I found a dark gray chalk paint.
I really love the charcoal color as it feels more masculine and ties into the rug quite well. {Disclaimer: there is normally a large framed photo that hangs above his bed, but I removed it for these pictures as it is personal.}
We added a swinging lamp, just like we did in my daughter and older son’s bedrooms. Also, it’s a bonus when your comforter and plant match!
A few simple budget-friendly changes and this cozy tween boy bedroom has really come together. It just feels so much better in here. I’m not sure how else to describe it beyond the word cozy.
