DINING ROOM LIGHT BEFORE
There I was just minding my own business and perusing an aisle at Home Goods. I happened across an enormous drum lampshade in the clearance section and thought, “Wow! That’s a big shade. I wonder what kind of lamp it would fit on.” And then a light bulb went off {figuratively…and yes, the pun was intended}.
“I wonder…”
And then I snatched up that enormous $11 shade and headed for the check-out.

Upon arriving home, I shared my crazy idea with my husband. He simply looked at me odd and said he’d think on it.
That he did…along with my 11 year old. Why? Because I recruited him. Honestly, he is an incredible problem-solver. And so the two of them chattered back and forth over the course of a few weeks about what would work.
THE SOLUTION
One trip to Home Depot later and my two guys were making my wacky DIY dining room light fixture idea happen!
To see what this light fixture looked like when we moved in, click HERE. That was a simple update and we have enjoyed the difference ever since. But now that the days are getting shorter and this house is feeling like home, I wanted some “cozy” lighting in our dining room. And adding a shade to our existing chandelier will give us that cozy glow.
There was one “problem” to this DIY dining room light fixture…the spider fitter was gold. And my chandelier was not {anymore}. There was one thing that got me started with this whole light makeover and it was going to get me out of it too.
Two words: spray paint!
My family thought I was crazy. Who tries to spray paint an immovable part of a lampshade? Ummm…this girl.
I thought my solution was pretty impressive. James is still wondering about it…but he does admit that it worked!
Enter 4 kitchen garbage bags and painters tape. It was a delicate matter around the four spots the spider fitter attached to the fabric shade. But patience won out.
And then I quickly taped up the bottom. You know, just in case.
I moved the operation outside for a few coats of spray paint on the fitter and the lighting hardware that would attach it to the chandelier.
And look! Due to some precision taping, no spray paint landed on the shade! {Insert a semi-obnoxious TA-DA stance…}
A few twists of the hardware into the bottom of the existing chandelier and our DIY dining room light fixture was done!
DIY DINING ROOM LIGHT FIXTURE AFTER
Can I say that I love this easy and cheap project? It adds that cozy glow I wanted to our dining room. But even moreso, it was so fun to watch James and our youngest work together to figure out a solution to my idea. That right there was worth the $11.

And yes, that is a mirror behind the giant plant. Not because it’s on display. I simply didn’t take the time to move it out of the way…while it waits to be hung up. {where? I don’t know yet!}
Our dining room is really coming together and all of the “little by little” is adding up. But what isn’t adding up are the costs. This DIY dining room light fixture was an amazing budget-friendly solution.
My husband suffers with his back. Some people say that it is osteochondrosis, others say that there is something about discs. Treatment on the recommendations of the doctor began to help only on the seventh day. Probably, we could leave the hospital on the ninth day without Diclofenac causing pain on kidneys. The father advised him Soma, he recovered on the second day after the next breakdown. Since then, we have come to the conclusion that it is better to overpay than to wait for it to pass. Have you ever done something like this? If so, tell me all about it! And if not…maybe you’ll try it sometime! Let me know!
