We transformed a completely empty area of our home into living spaces for our family. This DIY home office renovation was a huge project, but it was worth it to create a working space.
It was only 18 months ago that we moved into our home and I am very excited to share our newest renovation project. Now, this room began as a wide open space and it took a little over a year to complete it. Originally, we intended for the room to be used as a bedroom. But after a series of events and some serious practical thinking, James and I decided to instead make it into his home office.
Eventually, we’d like it to also serve as a second hang-out area with seating and a tv for movie nights. Specifically, we’d like that seating to be in the form of a trundle bed that could serve as a guest space and/or a bedroom for our kids to sleep in when they give up their bedrooms for guests. We have a lot of ideas, but…little by little.

OFFICE RENO BEFORE
Let’s take a quick peek back in time to when we first saw our home…
This is the entire space that we divided into two rooms, with a hallway down the middle. {You can see the other room by clicking HERE.}
OFFICE RENO DURING
Two months after we moved in, demo began in this space.
Work continued in the entire space for 7 months. After that amount of time, the space now “only” needed sheetrock and all the millions of finishing touches. We decided to shift our focus on completing our daughter’s bedroom. The office reno was put on hold for 6 months and this is how it looked during that time.
Earlier this year, we turned our focus back on this room and the hallway. We decided to sheetrock the entire space to save money and time. All of the baseboard and trim was added, along with the door jam and door {which we moved up from another spot in the house}. James and I then spent a weekend sanding the floors.
And then it was time to prime and paint the walls, ceiling, and baseboard, as well as apply polyurethane to the floors.
OFFICE RENO AFTER
At this point, I shed a few happy tears. The vision James and I had one hot summer day had come true. Many hours were spent in this space and I couldn’t be more proud of the hard work James poured into these rooms. It was a family affair and we all learned a lot through the process.
