I am giddy with excitement and I have decided to never leave my master bedroom again. Just kidding about the not leaving since the completion of our master bedroom makeover…well, sort of. I am thrilled with the results though and wish that I hadn’t ignored this room for three years.
My goal was light, bright, fresh, and clean…add a little cozy too. I felt like these were doable goals on a tiny budget. And since I often get asked about budget, the only things I purchased for this master bedroom makeover was paint and one drop cloth.

Let’s get started with a few before pictures and then a quick run-down of what I did to accomplish this master bedroom makeover.
Our master bedroom is an addition to the original 1836 farmhouse and directly below this space is our homeschool room and mud room.
Master Bedroom Makeover To Do List:
- Scrub the room top to bottom
- Patch the millions of nail holes
- Repaint ceiling, walls, trim, and doors
- Furniture makeover of nightstands and dressers
- Sew and hang new curtains on curtain rods that we re-positioned
- Use items that I have on hand to create a cozy atmosphere
Sounds simple, right? It was a simple list, but…that list took me an entire week to accomplish. All those hours were worth it and James and I love the outcome of all the work.
Let’s take a look at the furniture makeovers. First up were 2 nightstands that we’ve had since we got married. I have always enjoyed home decor and room makeovers, but I don’t always get it right the first time. These nightstands were a bit of a blunder, along with a dresser. In my defense: there weren’t products available then as there are now. I also had three young children.
This dresser is a recent freebie and it had so much potential.
I used my favorite Amy Howard at Home One Step Paint and a round hog hair brush to transform these pieces. As you will see in the after photos, I used “Ballet White” for the nightstands and “Paige Blue” with a few splashes of “Lady Singing the Blues” to transform the dressers.
It always looks worse before it looks better…that was my motto…
This view…I love walking into this master bedroom now!
As you can see, I kept the bed frame just as it was. Are you surprised that I didn’t paint it? The dark wood really grounds and pulls a center point to this master bedroom makeover and I have no plans on painting the bed frame.
{The door on the left goes to our closet and that little alcove by it leads to the hallway. The door on the right leads to our bathroom.}
The curtains are simply drop cloths, cut and hemmed to fit the windows. I had all but one set already on hand. I am not an expert at sewing, but I can hem a curtain…albeit, not a straight hem though. Oh, well. Done is better than perfect.
{I have a very basic sewing machine, like this one HERE.}
Gah! These dressers! I love them both now. I knew that there would be a ton of white in this room, with pops of woods and black. There needed to be a soft feminine color added to break all of that up. This color is exactly what I imagined for the room.
If you need me, I’ll be right here…
Friends…paint can perform miracles! Our bedroom was one that I would cringe and ignore as much as possible. I had been dreaming of a master bedroom that I could call a retreat. You know, one where I could take a nap, read a book, cuddle up and watch a movie with a kiddo, and sometimes just go and take a much needed breath. I am thrilled with the results that a week of work can accomplish.
How about you? Which room do you avoid? Maybe this is the day you get that paint and start transforming it into a space that you love.

Leigh
