We have been so blessed for the past three years to have an entire room dedicated to homeschool. I am so grateful. When we began homeschooling eight years ago, our homeschool space was a corner of our youngest’s bedroom. It wasn’t ideal and we ended up moving our school down to our finished basement by the next school year. As soon as I saw this room in our farmhouse though, I knew that it would be the home base for our school days. And today, I am so excited to show you our “three years in the making” homeschool room makeover.

HOMESCHOOL ROOM BEFORE
Let’s start with a few before photos. And you will notice that the room doesn’t look bad at all. It really was fine, but after making over the rest of our home, the green stuck out a bit.
I permanently “borrowed” this lamp from our family room after we replaced that space with an awesome barn light. {Click HERE for that post.} I did my spray paint trick on the lamp and it fits right in now.
This stone feature is actually the back of our dining room fireplace. Our homeschool room and the master bedroom above are additions to the original 1836 farmhouse. This stone is the exposed exterior of the fireplace in our dining room.
Remember the floating shelves that we installed earlier this year? They have been absolutely perfect for organizing our curriculum. I did paint the shelf wall at the time that we installed the shelves…with the promise of finishing the rest of the room over the summer.
We keep it old school here with a pretty old {but works fine} computer in our homeschool room. Mr. Little by Little Farmhouse hung these shelves in order to make this corner functional for online lessons.
ROOM MAKEOVER DURING
A little sneak peek of what I was up to in this corner:
Our homeschool room makeover needed: a good cleaning, a few coats of paint, and some organizing. On the weekend before our school year began, I tackled this homeschool room makeover project. (You can read about our first day HERE.)
It was so tedious to paint in all of the tiny spaces of the mantel, but eeeek…it was completely worth it because I love the outcome!
FARMHOUSE HOMESCHOOL ROOM MAKEOVER
I’ll give you one guess what color I painted our homeschool room. If you guessed Sherwin-Williams Pure White, then you are correct! But really, in my defense: I had to stick with the same color so that all of our rooms flow seamlessly.
And, yes, practicality won out here and my 5th grader’s curriculum is being stored on this mantel. I promise that I do have two other mantels that I decorate…one in our living room and the other in our dining room.
I used leftover paint from my son’s bedroom and I love the subtle difference in color from the walls. But I also feel like it lets the stone take a bit of the spotlight too. (Color is Behr Dolphin Fin.)
And if you recognize this table from our dining room…it is! I had originally made it over for that room and then it was replaced with a bigger table. This table is working out great for the four of us.
I love how our homeschool room now blends right in with our mud room.
Did you notice that we brought our painted piano in here? {Click HERE for a similar basket on our table.}
Can you spot our chicken coop outside this window? We can easily watch chicken shenanigans from our homeschool room.
I love General Finishes Gel Stain because it can make two different woods match flawlessly.
I know, there isn’t much decor in our homeschool room. I like to start out a school year with minimal decor and we add to our room as the years goes on. I do, however, always have some of the kid’s artwork hanging up.
I honestly did not think that painting this room white would make a big difference. It has five windows and lets in so much natural light already. I was pleasantly surprised to find that an all white room allowed the walls and window frames to disappear and we can see the beautiful flower garden outside so much clearer. The white has made the outdoors pop! And this has made us love our homeschool room makeover even more. ♥
