What better time for a room makeover than at the beginning of a brand new year? I am so excited to finally be tackling this mud room makeover. Now, this space isn’t anything horrid, it just hasn’t been updated by Little by Little Farmhouse yet. And it is also lacking some character…and organization.
This challenge comes with a low price tag and some guidelines. You can read the entire post by Erin at Lemons, Lavender, and Laundry for the full scoop. But if you are just looking for a brief summary, here it is: the makeover can utilize items you already have on hand and any new purchases must not total over $100. {You can meet some other wonderful bloggers who have also taken up this challenge at the bottom of this post.}
I am excited about this mud room makeover and transforming it into a room that is a reflection of the rest of our farmhouse. But I also want this makeover to result in our mud room serving its purpose well {aka help get us out the door quickly, easily, and without arguing!}.
Each week, I will update you on the progress of our mud room makeover, with the finally reveal being at the end of this month. At that time, I will share all of the after pictures with you, along with my expenses. If you would like to see more updates on this makeover as they happen, follow along on Instagram or Facebook.
Let’s get started where every good makeover begins. The before pictures, followed by the mud room makeover plan!
As you can see, it’s a good size mud room.
This door leads outside to the front of our farmhouse. We call this entry our “family” entrance…we usually try and have guests enter via the front door so they don’t have to deal with our hot mess in here.
On the other side of the mud room is our catch-all table.
As you can see, there are a lot of windows and not much wall space. {This is a theme throughout our entire home.}
And now for some ideas. I honestly don’t have an exact plan…I am known for winging-it most of the time with our home. But, I do have some roundabout ideas and know that it will all come together {I work best under pressure}.
Of course, the entire room will get a fresh coat of paint.
And then there is the issue of stuff. You know, coats, hats, scarves, shoes.
This ladder coat rack has served us well in this home and in our previous home. It is a unique idea, but I need something that will grow as my kids grow. When my husband first built this ladder coat rack, he placed three hooks on the lower rung for our children. This was perfect because the couldn’t reach the top. Now that their jackets are small adult sizes, we need to make some adjustments. I will probably stick with hooks, but I am tired of coats almost touching the floor.
And then there are all of those other items I mentioned previously. Just like the coats are getting bigger, so are the shoes and gloves, etc. We are in desperate need of some organization and storage for these with this mud room makeover. Again, I have some ideas, but they need to be tried out first to determine which will work best.
The door will definitely be getting a coat of paint, but I’m not sure if I will make it a statement color or not. Yep, I am sticking with the “let’s see how it goes” plan.
This photo below. Ugh. My archnemesis is here. Well, three actually. Let’s start with the most obvious: that sign. If you laughed out loud, it’s okay. I would too…if it wasn’t my life. 😉 Without naming any names or pointing fingers at stinky armpits, I didn’t care about decor when I threw this sign up on the wall. All I wanted was for the stink to end. Guess what? The sign worked! But now to figure out a less tacky solution.
Next up is that shoe horn. Again, not naming names or pointing fingers, but why do these exist? It really messes up the mojo of a room. So, yes, a solution needs to be figured out.
And then there is the lighting. I have no idea why an outdoor light has been placed indoors. An on-budget solution needs to be figured out for the lighting as well.
Drum roll please as I divulge a hidden secret…
Why must there be a green brick glazed floor? And with one single orange brick in the middle? Why oh why?
This area is definitely getting a makeover…even though it will end up with a rug covering most of it. Which brings me to another update…a rug! I’ve had a durable brown rug in here since we moved in and it has worked. But I need something more durable, darker, and easy to clean. Guys, we live in the country. This mud room always has mud in it. And if there isn’t mud, there is snow.
Let’s do a quick hop over to the other side and then we’ll wrap this up.
This table is vital to our family as we store pretty important “mud room related items” in these drawers. And the space on top and below is usually full of library books to return and any other items that are leaving our house. It is super functional and I know that I won’t find a better storage solution within my budget, so it will probably get a coat of paint to update and freshen it up. What color? Ummm…your guess is as good as mine!
Well, that’s it. I shared my dirty mud room with you. Now you’ve seen it all…sort of. I am so excited to share this mud room makeover process with you. But no judging on my winging-it, okay?
