After a few different changes over the years, this farmhouse painted kitchen cabinet makeover completely changed the look and feel of the entire room. It feels so bright, fresh, and cozy now.
MY PARENTS FARMHOUSE
When I was 10 years old, my parents purchased an 1800s farmhouse that need a lot of work. I don’t say that lightly. Floors, ceilings, heating, electricity, you name it: this house needed work on it. Plumbing even had to be installed. And not just a few pipes…a well had to be dug!
Looking back now, I can see what a huge risk that was and I admire all of the time, effort, and sweat that was poured into their house. And my brothers and I reaped the benefits of growing up there in the country.

THE KITCHEN
When my mom was originally designing the placement and layout of the kitchen, she purposely chose a smaller square footage. She wanted a cozy kitchen and 35 years late, that layout is still working for her.
The cabinets were custom-made for her kitchen and are great quality. But all these years {and a few updates like new countertops and beadboard} later and she wanted to give it a fresh new look.
SETTING UP THE MAKEOVER
When my mom mentioned that she was thinking about updating her kitchen and painting the cabinets, my response was: “When?” I was all in. She has helped me with so many projects over the years, that I was excited to give her a hand with this one.
My dad pitched in too and removed the cabinet doors before I arrived. We set to work getting our painting stations ready and figuring out the game plan with timing. I had one weekend and wanted to accomplish as much as possible during those few days.
In the week leading up to the farmhouse painted kitchen cabinet makeover, I did a review of the process by going back and reading over my own blog post. I knew the process from our kitchen makeover worked well, so I wanted to be sure that I got all the steps correct. {Click HERE for the step-by-step.}
THE BEFORE
The cabinets are originally a stained oak. As I mentioned earlier, my dad removed most of the cabinet doors prior to my arrival.
A few years ago, my mom painted a set of upper and lower cabinets her favorite red to add a little contrast.
THE ACTUAL MAKEOVER
My mom decided to keep the red cabinets. She loves that color and figured that if the contrast didn’t look right, she could paint these later on.
I won’t go over the process step-by-step, since I have that covered in another blog post. {Click HERE!} But I will give you a little sneak peek and a behind the scenes look. Remember: it often gets messier before it looks better. That’s just a part of the process.
FARMHOUSE PAINTED KITCHEN CABINET MAKEOVER
This is the exciting part! Every single room makeover leaves me in awe of the transformational power of some hard work…and paint!
I think the different colored cabinets look great. To be honest, I wasn’t so sure about it at first. But it’s an unexpected contrast and my parents love it!
My mom decided to keep the knobs the stained oak color and that was a great choice. The pop of wood tone adds warmth, charm, and is perfect for their farmhouse.
This rug really pops in here against the beautiful cream cabinets.
When they were renovating their farmhouse, my mom chose four large windows that looked out to their yard and pasture. The view is amazing!
She decided to make some curtains for the windows. These add a more finished look, but can also be closed on those sunny summer days when this kitchen can get very warm.
It was a lot of fun to work with my parents on this painted kitchen cabinet makeover. I never would have dreamed all those years ago that I would end up loving DIY just as much as my parents!

I love the paint contrast. Perfect for a country kitchen! Cabinets are a ton of work and quite the process, and your moms turned out great. I must admit I’m envious of her mixing bowl collection. I’m glad they can be displayed.

Thank you, Stacie! I know…that bowl collection is pretty amazing.

Love the contrasting cabinet! I saw in one picture a scalloped wood valence above the sink- and then a chalk board? I’m interested in that detail.
leighsn says
Good eye! That chalkboard was up originally and we took it down to paint the scalloped trim as part of it shows even when the chalkboard is up. Plus, if they decide to take down the chalkboard, it is already painted.

Every color on there is as if it was all part of one family-the granite, cupboards/red and cream, flooring, carpet. Amazing! Feels like a home should feel!! Congratulations
