It’s been a fun month with putting together this $100 Room Challenge and I am so excited to share our full bathroom makeover reveal. My goal was to stay true to the the time period when our home was built {1915}, but also add some function and simple beauty. Let’s take a quick peek at a few before photos:

Looking for a weekly recap? You can find them here: {Before} {Week One} {Week Two} {Week Three}
Now let’s see how it all turned out…
In the week three update, I shared these floating shelves that my husband and I built. The goal was for them to be pretty, but also functional. I was able to gather items from my house to fill them up.
This is our only full bathroom, so when we have overnight guests, they will definitely be using this room. Instead of having to dig around looking for items they may need, I wanted them to be visible and obvious.
These clear containers were perfect for having soap, cotton balls, and q-tips on hand. The little marmalade jar holds a few toothpaste and floss samples from the dentist {these are great for traveling and guests, but we typically use my homemade toothpaste recipe}.
And then, this conversation happened:
Husband: “Did you buy stock in Ivory soap?”
Me: {laughing} “No.”
Husband: “Are we allowed to use the soap in there?”
Me: {confused…until I realized that sometimes decor is only for looks}: “Of course.”
Husband: {eye roll…and chuckling}
When I was styling these shelves, my goal was to only use items I had on hand {mostly because the budget was pretty much gone at this point}. This old gym locker box is perfect for toilet paper. It looks much better than tossing the whole toilet paper bag up there, but it’s visible enough that it can be seen. Awkward, but…guests don’t like hidden toilet paper.
Remember the hook from my grandparents house? I love it in our full bathroom makeover. The charm goes well with the old medicine cabinet and original sink.
Speaking of the sink, I have a confession. I didn’t remove the rust as I had planned. Bummer, I know. But, here me out. After doing quite a bit of research, I realized that this project was going to require more time, effort, mess, inconvenience, smell, and money than I was able to give during this one month time frame. The sink area will get some love in the near future and I promise to update you when that happens.
While we’re confessing parts of the project that didn’t get done, let’s toss the light fixture in there too. This is the only lighting in this bathroom, so I didn’t want to aimlessly choose a new fixture based purely on budget. I did add Edison bulbs in week three, and those have made the room warmer, softer, and also adds an unexpected look.
I also opted to leave the wall to the left of the medicine cabinet empty. I felt like the shelves added enough warmth and “stuff” that a blank wall was needed.
Behind my faux valance curtain {week three} there is a budget-friendly vinyl roller shade that was added for privacy sake. That seems to be a good {cheap} solution.
Speaking of solutions…sometimes leaving things as they are is enough of a solution. I’ve been asked many times if we will paint the green shower tile. In a nutshell: probably not. At this point, we have too many {big} projects going on that we can’t invest in that kind of project right now. Also, it’s our only shower and we aren’t looking to be out of a shower for a few days while the tile paint dries. And last but not least, I don’t mind the green. It reminds me of the bathroom in our cape cod and that puts a smile on my face. While it is not original to the bathroom {it looks 1950ish} it has a vintage vibe to it. And so, I opted to work with the tile, rather than against it.
And here it is: the shower curtain! Any and all possibilities were considered for this space and in the end, the best solution was to make my own shower curtain.
Remember that my desire was for a full-length shower curtain? Well, any of the pre-made ones available were either ugly or out of my price range. And then I came across a photo of one that I absolutely loved and decided to make my own!
By simply sewing two window curtains together {and cutting off the excess} and adding this black tassel, I love how this shower curtain turned out.
In order to hang this {new} shower curtain, I had to remove the shower rod, which was screwed into the wall. This was due to the fact that I was using a window curtain that wouldn’t have shower hook holes. I opted for drapery hooks as an easy solution. You can see them slightly peeking out from the top.
This little corner behind the door was going to get a custom-built tall cabinet, but since that was not in the budget, we kept this little dresser in here. It has been the perfect solution to store {and hide} all the things.
I switched out the basket for a vintage-inspired tool box that I had on hand.
Using an on-hand thrift store frame {that I repainted} and Impressionist artwork from an old book, a little pretty was added to this corner…without being overwhelming.
Overall, I am so happy with this full bathroom makeover. I may have had different plans and ideas when I began this DIY project, but I am so glad that it turned out as it did. It just goes to show that with a little flexibility {with the budget and your time} a room makeover can still turn out perfect…even when it doesn’t go “according to plan.” $100 isn’t much, but there is something extra creative about working with a small budget.
So, how much did I spend this week? Let’s look at the break down:
Window curtains: $33.98
Black tassel: $6.96
Shower curtain clips: $11.98
All decor items: $0 (already had on hand)
Speaking of budget, let’s take one final peek at that and see how I did:
Week Four: $52.92
Total spent: $103.44
Yes, yes, I know…I went over budget by $3.44. Don’t throw the tomatoes quite yet. Here me out…first. There really isn’t anything that I can take out to break even, so I’m going with “over-budget” and really…my husband is not surprised. {insert wink}
This was a fun DIY project and doing it over the course of an entire month made it so much more feasible. Don’t feel like you have to spend thousands of dollars and do it all over the course of one weekend. Bring the budget down, open the time frame a bit, and let your creativity do the rest of the work!

Your bathroom turned out so pretty! What a great idea to make your own shower curtain. I wish I would have thought about that. Mine was cheap but I would have liked it to be longer too. This was a fun challenge and I really loved seeing what everyone did with their rooms. So inspiring!

Great makeover. Everything doesn’t need to be perfect to look great. Life isn’t perfect. I always liked the lived in look best because it’s so much more comfortable, homey and inviting.

I LOVE the shower curtain! It was worth waiting for!! For many years i have used a twin sheet to make my shower curtains. I too have a THING about having the shower curtain come close to the floor. I usually get a dollar tree shower curtain liner and hang in on the same hook on the back side of the twin sheet. In one apartment many years ago, I did appliques made from some floral fabric. I ironed on a product that made them iron on after i cut out the floral pieces. I made a trash can and some other things so everything would match. lol i’m not as much into matchy matchy now as I was then. thanks for the reveal. I love it! hugs, treen
