This half bath and laundry room makeover might be the longest one ever. You see, we started the actual demo within hours of purchasing our home last fall. It took some giant leaps the first few weeks and then…it was dead in the water for about a month and a half. We had gotten it to the functional point and left well enough alone. But then, I couldn’t stand the stop and go…so I finished up the final painting just a few days ago.
I have some plans to add some pretty things to our half bath and laundry room, but the extra decor {including a built-in around the washer and dryer, a rug, and some wall art} can be added as I have time and feel inspired.
{Post contains affiliate links. You can read our disclosure here.}
Let’s start back at the beginning. The very beginning. As in, the first tour of our home last summer:
We assume that the previous owner utilized this space as an office. At first, we thought that would be perfect for my husband. But then we realized that it wouldn’t be ideal as it is directly off the dining room and next to the kitchen. I can’t keep our kids quiet all day {we homeschool}. And so, we began to think about how this room could serve our family best.
Remember the toilet in the closet episode? {Click HERE to read all about that.} Well, that was considered a half bath. Yikes! It was not ideal for us and we really needed a second bathroom. {Click HERE to see our full bathroom makeover.} Well, why not turn this room into a bathroom? Wait! Let’s add the laundry too, so that we don’t have to do it downstairs to the dirty, dusty, and old basement. {Actually, there wasn’t even a hook-up for the dryer down there!}
So, within a few hours of owning our home, the built-in for the office was removed. The main reason for this was so that I could refinish the floors under the desk as they would be exposed when we converted it into a bathroom.
Time to sand the floors…
We then hired someone to install all the plumbing for a toilet, sink, washer, and dryer, as well as all the electrical work.
And then moving day came and this is what my dining room looked like for a few days:
Let’s just say that by the time the washer and dryer were hooked up, I had 15+ loads of laundry to do. {Disclaimer: most of it was old towels and blankets that we use for projects, but came in handy on a very muddy moving day.}
So now we had a washer, dryer {that we moved from our farmhouse}, a toilet {from the now coat closet}, and all we needed was a sink. Our budget was pretty well tapped out at this point and we went a little rogue. We had been given an apron sink about 5 years ago and had moved it twice. I was just waiting for the right kitchen to install it in. But it never came. {And yes, I said kitchen…stay with me here.} Well, we don’t have a kitchen remodel in the near future and figured that we should use what we have. And so we did!
I found a cheap old dresser online and Mr. Little by Little Home converted it into a vanity. {I promise to share more about that in the future!}
BEHIND THE SCENES:
And so, three months after our initial demo day and countless hours spent on plumbing, electricity, floors, and painting, here it is. Our half bath and laundry room makeover:
Why, yes, the dresser got a makeover too. {More coming on that soon, but a little sneak peek of what I used below.}
I absolutely loved working with the Country Chic paint line for this dresser makeover.
This sink now serves as a bathroom vanity, laundry utility sink, and also a dog washing station.
The walls are painted Behr Swiss Coffee in flat and the trim is simply Behr’s white base in satin.
Eventually, we’ll add some shelving above and on the side of the washer and dryer. It will add some storage space, but also cover up the hoses. This old shelf has been in our two previous homes and is the perfect temporary solution.
This original window is one of my favorite in our home. It faces south and lets in the most wonderful light all day long.
Yep, using what we have means this potty now has a new home…outside of a closet. 😉
Converting an office into our half bath and laundry room has been the perfect solution for our family in this home. It was fun to imagine this transformation and even more fun to watch all the various parts of this half bath and laundry room makeover happen.
I hope it inspires you to re-imagine a room in your house. Make your home one that serves your family best…

Hi Leigh,
I’ve been “stalking”your IG page and loving your stories. You’re a natural. You speak from the heart and always find the goodness in everything that happens. I appreciate the fact that you and the family make do and stick to your budget rather than buy the latest and greatest whatever.
We live in a 100 year old Dutch Colonial and are reconstructing our main bath. Your $100 makeover and the half bath redo have kept us inspired to continue forging onward.
Thank you for sharing your ideas I love them.
