A house often becomes a home little by little. Our home office update is no exception. Using what we have to create a functional space is as far as the budget has allowed at this point.
It was an adventurous year with our reno project and James was excited to get his home office into this space. Since the room has more square footage than he needs, we came up with a plan to utilize the rest of the room. Well, it’s been a little over 6 months and he is quite settled, but the rest of the space is not. I keep reminding myself that we do things little by little and it will eventually get to what we want it to be.

But in the meantime, I wanted to share with you what it looks like right now. We’ve simply been using what we already have until the budget is there to add the fun ideas that I have in mind. Let’s take a peek and call this a “pre-makeover home office update!”
HOME OFFICE BEFORE
Going way back, this is what our home office looked like prior to renovating the space.
One year later and the room was ready to be used. {Click HERE to see the entire amazing before and after!}
HOME OFFICE UPDATE
Literally, once the paint and floors were dry, we moved James into the space and added touches to make the room feel more homey. I already had this rug, curtains, roller shade, chair, lamp, and table, so this was basically a free makeover!
The plan is to add a trundle bed to the nook on the right. It will serve us with some storage underneath, as well as an extra bed. But we also wanted it to be available for every day use as an extra “couch” to hang-out or read.
Opposite of where the trundle bed will go, we have a second-hand table with an extra tv and laptop. My kids will often use this space to work on special computer projects that only James can help them with.
Originally, I had planned to add a long dresser to this wall space. My thought was that it would add some storage for office supplies. On top, would be a tv that could be used for movie nights. But now that I see my kids utilize it for fun computer “work,” I am brainstorming on how to add storage, space for a chair and laptop, and movie nights.
Are you ready for this? I cannot even look at this picture for very long. {Ha!} I am blessed with a husband who is very low maintenance. With that comes the ability to function in a “not pleasing to the eye” environment. Don’t tell him yet, but I will eventually get my hands on his office space. 😉 For now, I leave him to his work and the office he created with whatever he could find extra in our home.
With the pitch of the ceiling, James had to be creative with the closet. For a while, this was open and we thought about adding a curtain. And then a friend mentioned free doors that may work. After a lot of cutting and splicing, the doors now fit the closet.
FUTURE PLANS
I’ll be honest and tell you that I was holding off on this office update. My pride wanted to share a perfectly curated home office with all the functional beauty. But, patience is a virtue, right? And I am leaning into that and the reminder that this takes time and it’s okay. We will continue to use this home office as best as we can and be content to…little by little…create the space we know it can become.

I love it, Leigh! My hubby has his own space (also in the “guest room”) and my best advice is “Just don’t look at it”. 😂
He has his things arranged not at all in the way that I would do it, but it’s his space and it’s somewhere that I don’t have to see it every day. Win/win

Very good advice and I may have to make half the room look nice and leave his side alone. 😉

Your IG account states you have not posted anything. I’m confused.

Can you give me more info? On my IG account or on my blog? Thanks!

Love it Leigh! This room will truly evolve over time and right now you’ve created the ‘foundation’ which is a great start. I find your blog more realistic living compared to others viewed. There are times, when viewing other blogs, I think do you really live like this because it’s not like that in my home – COVID or before! ha Agree with reader, Laurie’s comments because compared to my room, hubby’s room looks like a tornado went through it. Which is why I’m the keeper of any important records/files! ha He’s a keeper of stuff I would have tossed or given away a long time ago……..sigh

You and Laurie are very wise. I may just have to turn a blind eye to that side. 😉 And thank you. I hope things are realistic here…no time to be anything else. 😉
