We recently took down our upper cabinets and replaced them with kitchen open shelving and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. I tried to make do with the upper cabinets in our new home, but I was constantly losing everything in them. It also felt like they were hung too high and I wasn’t able to reach anything on the top shelf. And even though the square footage of our kitchen is pretty big, the upper cabinets in my face made the room feel small and claustrophobic.

Honestly, I didn’t know what I was going to do with this kitchen when we moved in. My goal had been to live with it for a little while before making any decisions. Does 3 months count as “a little while?” I spent some time on Pinterest and found a constant theme from my inspiration photos: kitchen open shelving!
HOW WE ADDED KITCHEN OPEN SHELVING:
We easily took the upper cabinets down with just a drill. Oh and it turns out that each cabinet section was only being held in place by 2 screws! Yikes!
In old homes, you never know what you may find behind things. Apparently this room used to be mustard yellow and I am wondering if it originally had kitchen open shelving by the look of those brown lines!
I cannot believe I’m about to show this next photo, but I will anyway. Why? Because we’re friends and friends share real life. {And if you’re grossed out easily, turn away!}
Because the plan was to paint over this teal color with a lighter color, I covered the entire kitchen with 2 coats of primer.
Followed by 2 coats of my new favorite off-white/cream: Behr Swiss Coffee.
TIME TO ADD THE SHELVES:
We purchased some “common boards” from The Home Depot and I stained them with Minwax Early American. Once those were ready, James stepped in and hung the 3 kitchen open shelving units. We spaced the bottom shelf 19″ above the countertop and allowed almost 12″ between the other shelves.
And then it was time for some kitchen open shelving fun: styling! My goal in our home is functional beauty and that carries into the kitchen as well. I wanted my most frequently used ingredients to be on hand at all times. Thus, functional. But I also wanted them to look nice. And that’s where the beauty comes in.
I loaded up all of my jars and placed the plates and bowls that we use every day on our new kitchen open shelving. And then I had a little fun adding some pretty items to the tippy top shelf. Stepping back, realized that this is what our kitchen needed all along: open shelving!

Your open shelves look great and really do help make the kitchen look more open! What a nice collection of vintage pretties you have on the top shelf. Did you use a clear coat of any kind over the stain?
leighsn says
Great question! I chose not to put any type of clear coat on the shelves. I like the natural look of them and don’t plan to have any liquid, etc on them that would leak. I am open to putting a protective coat on them if I feel that it needs it down the road.

Hi Leigh, it looks great! I’m thinking of doing something similar, over my range wall too. How deep are your shelves?
