Closets can easily become a mess. Our linen closet was like that until it got a makeover. And I want to share my linen closet organization tips to help you solve the dilemma of an overflowing closet.
Recently, our second floor hallway/landing area received a makeover. The budget was small: $100. And that space included this linen closet makeover. To be honest, I didn’t know if it could be pulled off. Turns out that it can! Now I want to dive in a bit and share the linen closet organization tips that I used.

LINEN CLOSET BEFORE
Let’s take a quick peek at the starting point. It was an absolute mess. But somehow I knew where everything was.
I told myself that was no excuse for living with it in this state and that it could be more organized. Any why not throw a little pretty in there too?
Functional beauty.
ONLY PUT IN THE NECESSARY
Once the closet was cleaned out and repainted, I went through every single item that was previously stuffed in here. Some items didn’t need to be included in this linen closet organization. For example: beach towels. We use them a few times a year and those really didn’t need to take up prime real estate in our linen closet. There were items that I hadn’t used and those were donated. Multiples of anything were combined into one container.
MAKE IT PRETTY…ON A BUDGET
Now that it was all in here, it just didn’t look as pretty as I knew it could. I was using a few baskets and containers that I already had, as well as some new ones. These could be made to look more cohesive with…spray paint!
Shop your home for containers that are not being used or could be better utilized in your linen closet organization.
GROUP LIKE-MINDED ITEMS
Make a space work FOR you! Group like-minded items together.
That was my goal for this shelf. It holds all of our medicines, bandages, heating pad, etc.
PUT LESS USED ITEMS UP HIGH
At the very top of our linen closet are the things we use less frequently. Guest towels, cleaning products, hair clippers, steamer. Right below are refills of bath products that are fairly easily accessible.
USE BASKETS AND CONTAINERS
For optimal linen closet organization, contain everything in some sort of basket or bin. Even when those containers get a little messy, it’s much easier to straighten up than a shelf full or products.
THINK OUTSIDE THE BATH AISLE
Don’t limit yourself to only the organizational tools in the bath aisle. Take a stroll down that kitchen and laundry aisle too.
The two gold baskets {both were spray-painted!} and the lazy susan are from the kitchen section. There is only one rule for your linen closet organization: make it work for your home!
BE PURPOSEFUL IN THE LAYOUT
Before throwing everything in, think about what would work best for your family.
For example: all of our medical needs are in the middle of the closet. As I mentioned earlier, use the space up top for the least used items.
But don’t forget the floor too! Use that space as a shelf. For us, I used a large basket to hold all of my project drop cloths. You can also catch a glimpse of our toilet “needs” down there, along with a fire extinguisher.
GRAB A CADDY!
One of the linen closet organization results that I am the most “excited” about is this. Using a shower caddy, I now have all of my bathroom cleaning supplies in one place. Prior to this, I would grab a few products and take them to both bathrooms. Then come back and get the rest. Now that it’s all in one caddy, I grab the handle and am off to clean my bathrooms.
I’m over here wishing I thought of this sooner…but better late than never!

LINEN CLOSET AFTER
Using what I have, getting rid of unneeded items, grouping like items together, and grabbing some bins pulled this linen closet organization off!
Do you have any closets that are in need of a little help? Which tip could you use today in that space?

Hmm any chance one more shelf could be installed towards the bottom? Give thought as it looks like it’s possible. Maybe for placing tissue boxes or bars of soap unless they are elsewhere in the home. Otherwise, great transformation!

Maybe down the road. For this makeover, I had a tight budget. So far, it’s working with the space and container we have now. And I actually have our bars of soap stored in a jar in our bathroom. 😉

Love this! But I wonder where you keep your linens?
