The classic book, Little Women, by Louisa May Alcott is always a great choice for a monthly book club theme. The discussion around the characters and story line will be lively and a great way to get to know the other book club members.
With my daughter’s monthly book club all set up, we now needed to figure out how to run a meeting. We chose the book, Little Women for the first club meeting since it is so rich in history, language, and stories.

After talking it through with her, we decided that there were a few key elements: food/drink, ambiance, and discussion questions.

FOOD AND DRINK
My daughter wanted to include tea in each monthly meeting and so this first time, we went with sweet tea-like foods. The only requirement for me was that I could purchase everything at Costco. Ha! This came purely out of convenience. My week was extremely full and so, I phoned this one in and served pre-made sweets.
AMBIANCE
The monthly book club meetings will be held in our home. To help the girls feel comfortable to be themselves, my husband and boys stay upstairs. I hang around in case the girls need anything, but I mostly let them lead their own discussion.
Each month, the decor may change a little depending upon the book and the season. We may even have candles or soft music playing in the background.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
My daughter takes the time prior to their meeting to prepare discussion questions. For the first few months, while the girls got to know one another, these were essential. As time has gone by and the girls know each other well, the discussion questions are mostly used to keep them on track.

MOVIE NIGHT FOLLOW-UP
Because it’s fun to have some girls’ nights, we decided to add a monthly movie night for the books that have a decent movie. When it comes to Little Women, there are a few choices. Our favorites are the 1994 and 2019 movies.
This Little Women book club meeting was the perfect way to get started. It has us so excited about future meetings!
