A living room game table: children love to play games, so why not create a special spot just for them in the heart of the home…
Our living room has an interesting set up with the front part bumped out from the rest of the house. It has presented a few “design challenges” since moving in last year. There have been plenty of changes in that time and I love that each one gets us closer to what will serve our family best. {Click HERE to get a better idea of the layout.}

Recently on Instagram, I mentioned that one corner of it was just dead space. And so, I asked for some suggestions. One in particular clicked with me immediately and my mind began coming up with a solution. It took a little time to find the right table, but once again, Facebook Marketplace did not disappoint. Some DIY on the chairs and table and a living room game table was born!
GAME TABLE BEFORE:
Disclaimer: the number one “job” of this little table and chair set is to serve my family. Games and puzzles are one way it will do that. But…I have also found my kids sitting here doing their school work, reading a book, drawing, or writing a letter. Each of those times has brought a huge smile to my face. Watching my family enjoy our home brings me such joy. {Click HERE for more info on their school work.}
The chair set was found last winter at a local thrift store. It needed a good cleaning up, a fresh coat of paint, and new fabric for the seat cushion.
The table also needed a cleaning. And then I added three coats of gel stain to give it a fresh new look. {This is the same gel stain I used on our back porch chair…click HERE for that makeover.}
AND THE AFTER:
This little table and chair set fit perfectly off to the side and I have loved coming in and finding papers strewn all over it. That means someone has been using it and the fact that it’s tucked away means it can be left messy.
IT’S GAME TIME:
Anyone have a kiddo that is always up for a game? I’ve got one of those…and Clue is a favorite.
Guess what? This game board was give to me when I was just about her age. Yes, it’s old…or is it considered vintage? Ha!
I feel so blessed that someone happened to mention that they thought my family would find a lot of use with a little table and chairs. Often, others can look in and see something that you don’t quite see. And I am so happy that person saw that we are a family who loves cozy spots, games, books, and pads of paper.
I also love the fact that it only seats 2. I know, that sounds odd. But, I see it as a little getaway spot for one or two people. I enjoy having little spaces to “sneak off to” and my kids seem to have inherited that from me. {Oh and family game nights, where it is all 5 of us getting rowdy with a game, happen in our dining room or on the floor in our living room.
Have you ever had someone make a kind suggestion that you carried through with? Did you love the result? I’d love to hear…leave me a comment below.

What a perfect little space and use for the space! My kids love Clue too! A couple years ago I bought a rather large coffee table off of Craigslist and about a year ago I finally got around to refinishing it. The thing I loved about it was the two large storage drawers it has. That’s were we store all our games and the top is large enough to play the games right there on it! So many nights have turned into family game night on top of our coffee table with all the kids gathered around on all sides. I don’t think I will ever part with that piece! And it was actually Lauren from Bless’er House.com that inspired me to search for one that size. She used hers for movie and toy storage but I knew I wanted one to store all our card and board games! It’s been perfect! 💕

Jana,
Thank you for sharing that story. I love that you found an affordable piece and perfectly made it yours by refinishing it. And how fun that a blogger encouraged you to put your own twist on it! ♥

We have a games table out as well. A couple years ago we gifted our kids a wooden game that is pretty enough to be decor and it stays out all the time. It also gets played often!

Oh, I love this, Linda! Games are a great way for people to connect. ♥
