A master bedroom makeover has been on my to-do list for a while, but we needed to start with the hardest part of it first: the floors and painting.
Our master bedroom was in desperate need of a makeover. Yes, it needs a lot of “style” added to it…including an actual bed frame. {That was a casualty of the move.} But before any of the pretty things could happen, I really needed to concentrate on the base of it all. And put in the hard work required.
The first project in our master bedroom would need to be the floors. This had to be done sooner or later and I choose sooner so that we can just enjoy the room and not have this part looming in the future. Once the floors were sanded and the room cleaned up, painting would be the natural next step.
MASTER BEDROOM BEFORE
I never show anyone our bedroom. Actually, I dreaded even going in here because it was gross. Making it functional for sleep and storing our clothing had been the priority. And it definitely showed…
Our master bedroom is actually a very large room. The challenge is the layout; but that is typical for an older home.

And yes, the curtains that were in my son’s bedroom at our farmhouse are thumb-tacked to our window frame. Just in case you were wondering how classy we had been keeping things.
FLOOR REFINISHING BEFORE
We rented a floor sander for a day and let me tell you: it was a very hot day. Actually, the entire week was hot and I felt every degree of that with the windows open for ventilation.
Here is an example of sanded vs unsanded floors in our master bedroom.

FLOOR REFINISHING AFTER
PAINTING THE ROOM
Once the floors were completely sanded, plastic was laid down to protect them during the painting process. It took one coat of primer and two coats of paint. {Color is Behr Swiss Coffee}
I’m smiling about the final outcome…I can see it now!
ROOM PAINTING AFTER
Once the room was completely painted, all the supplies could be removed.
MASTER BEDROOM AFTER
After two coats of polyurethane and days to cure, our bedroom floor and painting makeover is complete!
And now the fun begins…making this room a cozy haven.

Looks amazing!
Did you apply the polyurethane to the floors yourself? What kind did you use? Did you sand after each coat? How long did you wait before applying the 2nd coat? Thank you.
