You know when you buy or sell a home and you never quite feel like it’s a done deal until you are sitting there at closing? Well, that’s where we are right now. But, we do feel pretty solid about how things stand now, so I wanted to give you a moving update…and a preview of our new home.
Yes, you read that right! We have a house to move to. Woohoo! Before we get to talking about our new home, let me tell you about the sale of our farmhouse.
We have a very sweet couple as buyer’s of our farmhouse. They are very excited about making this house their home. And guess what? We sold it on our own. I’ll be honest, I wanted to quit at one point {okay, at a few points} but I am glad that we stuck with it.
As of right now, all of the paperwork is being worked on for the sale of our farmhouse and the inspection was done earlier this week.
Now, let’s chat about our “new” home. This might sound cliché, but the home we plan to purchase was the very first house we walked through. I didn’t plan it that way. It’s just the way our agent set it up. We really liked it that first day, but knew that we needed to look at more homes to be sure. And we did…look at {many} many homes. And every single one was compared to this very first home. We even had a second showing of the house. But…we waited to put in an offer.
Why?
Well, we wanted a contract on our current home first. Owning two houses won’t work for us, so we didn’t want to get ourselves into a situation that could have that type of outcome. And so we waited…a few weeks actually, while our farmhouse was on the market. I was a little worried the house that made my heart go pitter-patter would be snatched up in the meantime. But, friends, God is bigger than the housing market and I knew that if He wanted us there, He would get us there.
And then it happened. We had a contract on our home. Yipee! We made an appointment with our agent for a few days later to take one more walk-through and then we would write up an offer.
The night before that appointment, our agent contacted us and said that another offer had been made on the house. We had 20 hours to put in our offer. We didn’t need that much time. We knew what our budget was and no matter what, we were going to stick with it.
Let’s just say that this all happened on a Friday and we didn’t expect to hear anything until after the weekend. The sellers didn’t waste any time and after a little back and forth, on Sunday afternoon we received the news that our offer had been accepted.
(I do have to say that I felt bad for the people with the other offer. Maybe some people wouldn’t feel badly because we’ve all been on both sides of situations like this. But, I did feel a little sorry that our excitement may have been at their disappointment. I have since been praying that God has another plan for them…even better than this house.)
The inspection on our “new” home was yesterday. We know enough about homes that after two walk-throughs, we knew there weren’t any big issues that would kill the deal. No house is perfect. They all have their flaws. It just depends upon whether you want to work with those flaws or not. And we have chosen to work with the flaws in this home.
I know, I know…you want details on our new home. I can give you a little bit of information, but since we do not own this house, I cannot {without the owner’s permission} divulge details or full home photos. Here is what I can tell you:
- It is reminiscent of a Dutch Colonial.
- Built in 1915…come on, you knew I couldn’t buy a new home…but, 1915 is “newer.”
- It sits in the sweetest neighborhood with cute houses full of character and charm.
- We are definitely heading back to the suburbs. But, it’s okay, because that is where we lived before moving to our farmhouse.
Since I can’t share a full home tour with you, I do have a few photos showing some of the character and charm that made my heart pitter-patter. ♥
One of the first things I thought of when we began seriously discussing this home was where the Christmas tree would go. Mr. Little by Little Farmhouse chuckled because he knew it was a legitimate consideration for me. I didn’t have to think long, because right here is where we will trim the tree. I’m giddy just thinking about our first Christmas.
And then there is the bathroom floor. I am swooning. They aren’t perfect and could probably use some work, but friends, it’s beautiful to me.
Let’s chat about the stair case. I love that they turn twice to get up to the second floor. Yes, getting furniture upstairs may be a hassle, but I think it’s worth it. {Hubby may say something different though. Ha!}
Let’s talk doorknobs. Gah! I love these. They fit the charm of the home perfectly.
Can we talk about floors again? These may not look fancy, but they are in great shape and are…in the attic. This space is big and has so much potential. We plan to live in the house for a little while first, but the attic has the possibility of bedrooms, a family room, bathroom, etc. The potential in this space really has us all excited.
One more charming house detail and then we’ll take a little peek in the garage. This little cubby is where the milkman used to drop off milk at the house. Eeek! I love this little functional detail of history.
The garage is super old. But I love that about it. Yes, it will need some work down the road, but…my minivan can fit in there. And, the original wood inside had me at hello…
Thank you, friends, for your encouragement through this process. If you had told us a year ago that this what what we’d be doing right now, we would of said you were crazy. But, when God places new plans on your heart, it’s best to jump. Right now we are in the midst of that jump and we thank you for loving and supporting us through it.
So, tell me…what do you think? Is the new home what you expected from us? What’s your favorite part about it?
xo,
Leigh
