Functional beauty doesn’t have to be sacrificed for the sake of practicality in an entryway. This cozy vintage entryway rug is the perfect solution for a small space.
Our entryway is the main entrance that we go in and out of every single day. And it’s the one that friends and family use when they come over.
The original makeover of this space involved removing a coat closet and opening it up to give us more room. {Click HERE to see what it looked like when we moved in!} But after a while, I felt like changing things up a bit to accommodate our needs. {You can see what changes were made by clicking HERE.} There was one thing that stayed the same through both of these makeovers though: an ugly rug.

SIMPLE ENTRYWAY RUG SOLUTION
My practical side was warring with my functional beauty tendency and it took an entire year until one side…well, won! I just couldn’t look at a stained brown rug any longer and decided to carry over a rug trend from our laundry room. {Click HERE for that room makeover: it’s a crazy one!}
Okay, a little clarification: this new cozy vintage-looking entryway rug found me. I didn’t find it. This space is an odd size. Approximately 5 feet by 5 feet. A runner won’t do as I want a rug to extend under the dresser to catch what falls off wet dirty shoes. A round rug wouldn’t work either as too much dirt would fall around the edge by the door. Oh and a 4’x6′ was too narrow, but at the same time, too long. And a 5’x7′ was way too long and extended far into our staircase hallway. {We actually just gave that space a makeover…for $100! Check it out HERE!}
I had been searching for a few months on so many websites looking for a 5’x5′ rug that would: look good in this space and be in my budget. And then one day, this one popped up. {Click HERE for this rug.}
COZY VINTAGE ENTRYWAY RUG
The number one question I will probably get in regards to putting a “pretty rug” in our entryway is whether I am worried about it getting dirty. My answer: no. Because it will get dirty.
In our previous homes, we had a few doors that we would use to go in an out of our home. There was no one entryway that took a beating quite like this one does. I’ve decided that I would rather have a pretty rug here that I need to replace more often than an ugly one…that will need to be replaced just as often. Remember: we live in the northeast with all the seasons. And I have kids. It’s just a reality of my life. But I don’t think that functional beauty needs to be sacrificed in an entryway.
Plus, I would rather guests have a pretty view when they come and go from our home…
ENTRYWAY DETAILS
This dresser has been the perfect solution to store items that need to be near the door, but are best kept out of sight. {See what this dresser looked like before by clicking HERE.}
My solution to hold the wet muddy shoes we wear each day is a boot tray. The black of the traysemi-conceals them. And the bottom drawer of the dresser holds shoes that we only use once a week.
The colors of this rug tie in well to the rest of our home and I am really enjoying a little touch of cozy vintage every time we walk in an out of our home.
What do you think? Is my solution to add functional beauty what you would do in this space? Any great ideas on where to find 5’x5′ rugs without breaking the bank?

That rug is gorgeous! Also, I think the fact that is is multicolored means that stains won’t be near as noticeable as they would be on a solid colored rug. I bet if you keep it vacuumed regularly and clean it once a year or so, it will stay looking nice for a long time! I love patterned rugs for that reason as well as the interest they add to the floor when the room is very neutral. Thanks for sharing , I love your blog and your sweet simple vintage style!

Looks great! I have been having this war with myself too. The previous owner had left a very functional rug in the foyer and I appreciated it greatly but it has been a year and I am going to buy myself a pretty rug, that is also wide enough to cover the cracks in the tiling there! Pretty and functional can co-exist. Thank you!
