Homemade toothpaste is a great alternative to store-bought brands and this is a great non-coconut oil toothpaste option.
My family began using homemade toothpaste ten years ago. By avoiding store-bought toothpaste, we have saved a lot of money and our teeth are amazing. Zero cavities for all five of us!

The initial toothpaste recipe I created was fantastic for my family. We used it in our two previous homes. But for some reason in this house, the coconut oil is causing issues with our bathroom pipes. I do know that coconut oil hardens when it cools and I can only assume that it was getting lodged in our pipes. Only in this house though and not our two previous homes.
{I do still LOVE that recipe and you can see it HERE.}
A simple solution would be for everyone to spit the coconut oil toothpaste out into our garbage. But I just didn’t see that happening in any type of neat or sanitary way. And so, I set to creating a non-coconut oil toothpaste recipe. Same benefits for our teeth and budget, but also safe for our home.
{Disclaimer: this recipe is “non-coconut oil” in that it does not utilize coconut oil straight from the jar like my other and most other homemade toothpastes do. If you are avoiding coconut oil for other reasons besides my above stated reason due to it clogging up pipes, check that coconut oil is not present in the other ingredients. This recipe has been made to avoid the bulk of coconut oil, but the lack of amounts in other ingredients cannot be guaranteed.}
NON-COCONUT OIL TOOTHPASTE RECIPE INGREDIENTS
1 cup baking soda
6 Tablespoons castile soap
6 Tablespoons olive oil or avocado oil
2 Tablespoons xylitol
Orange and mint essential oil
DIRECTIONS TO MAKE HOMEMADE TOOTHPASTE
One by one, add the ingredients to a medium-sized bowl:
1 cup of baking soda {I prefer using a good quality baking soda over a cheap brand.}
6 Tablespoons castile soap {I use Dr. Bronner’s “Baby Unscented”}
6 Tablespoons olive oil {I use whichever brand I have on hand. This day happened to be one from Costco.}

2 Tablespoons xylitol {This adds a “sweetness” that cuts the soda and soap. But xylitol has many health benefits for teeth.}
Add orange and mint essential oil. Use whichever brand you feel most comfortable with and always add only a few drops at a time so it does not become overwhelming. No matter which brand you use, a good ratio is add half as many drops of mint as you do of orange. {For example: 4 orange and 2 mint}
Stir all the ingredients until it is mixed well.
Transfer to individual containers. Each member of my family has their own homemade toothpaste container. I only fill it halfway and thoroughly wash it before refilling.
The toothpaste will slighly solidify once it sits at room temperature. That is completely normal.
To use this toothpaste, just dip your toothbrush into the container and scoop some out. You will only need a thin coating on your toothbrush for each use. A little goes a long way!

I cannot recommend a homemade toothpaste recipe enough. Your teeth will feel amazing and the health of your teeth will greatly improve.

I’m considering trying this! Isn’t fractionated coconut oil in liquid form? Would it work also? Thanks!

Hi! Excited to try this. Does any kind of Castile soap work? Thanks!

I am sure that another brand would work fine. I have only ever used this one and the unscented, so I can’t say that with 100% uncertainty. But I don’t imagine it would make a difference. If you try another brand or scent, let me know how it goes!

Oh my gosh!! Your Heal Earth Castile soap is made with coconut oil!! It’s the second ingredient right on the label in plain sight!! Please take this recipe down immediately. My husband and many others who are looking for coconut free products are allergic to coconut. This recipe could be harmful to them. Perhaps you could find an alternative ingredient. Karen

Sorry for the confusion on this post, Karen. I did add a disclaimer that the goal of this recipe is to remove coconut oil straight from the jar. If you find an alternative to the castile soap, let me know!

Firstly, do your due diligence. Take personal responsibility for your health. Your husband also has the same opportunity, which is a choice for us all. Will you demand that supermarkets remove all products with coconut derived ingredients from their shelves as well? How likely do you think this is to happen, even if you stamp your feet & threaten a lawsuit? It takes seconds to read an ingredient label, which we all should be doing.
Secondly, if you do some research, as we all should, you will find that true castile soap is made from olive oil. Look for one such as this, whatever brand it may be, and share your findings here. This way, rather than putting unreasonable demands on others, you become part of the solution for people such as your husband & many others.
Much love & health to all 🙂

I am excited to make this Leigh! We’ve switched over so many products in our hone to healthier choices and toothpaste is next on the list! I’m curious though, what does the soap do? And it’s safe to put in our mouth? Just extra curious about that ingredient! 😊 Thx so much for all the tips and recipe!

Great question! The soap will add a little “foam” but also just aids in the cleaning. The liquid also makes it more of a paste rather than just being more on the dry side. Feel free to play around with the recipe a little and make it your own!
