Painting existing kitchen cabinets is a budget-friendly alternative. But how does the paint hold up? I am sharing our painted kitchen cabinets: one year later.
A kitchen renovation was not in the plans when we first moved in. And for the next six months, I tried to embrace the look of our kitchen cabinets. But even after removing all of the grime and grease, they still looked bad. That led to the decision to paint them and here we are now with a painted kitchen cabinets: one year later review.

KITCHEN CABINETS BEFORE
Let’s take a quick peek at what our kitchen looked like when we moved in.
We made over our kitchen in two phases. The first involved removing our upper cabinets and replacing them with open shelves. {Click HERE for that process.} After that, came the painting of the remaining cabinets. {Click HERE for a tutorial.}
BEHIND THE SCENES
KITCHEN CABINETS ONE YEAR LATER
Now we’ll take a jump to one year after painting the cabinets.
Any first impressions?
If you think it still looks great, then you are right!
{DIY Kitchen Open Shelving} {How to Paint Kitchen Cabinets}
I have been so happy with how well painting our kitchen cabinets has held up. This outcome is definitely attributed to the process of cleaning, priming, painting, and curing. And the paint too! I highly recommend the Benjamin Moore Advance option for painting kitchen cabinets.
Now…it isn’t all perfectly perfect. There is one spot that has gotten scratched up from use.
As you can see, the top green layer of paint is scratched off in some spots. The ironic (or annoying) thing about this is that it doesn’t need to be like this. My kitchen is used constantly by everyone in the family. Apparently many of “those people” choose not to use the handle on this cabinet. Ha!
I am not concerned about it and will simply get out a small paint brush and touch this area up with leftover paint. Problem solved!
Other than that, the one year of painted kitchen cabinets gets two thumbs up from me!
It feels like a completely different kitchen from when we moved in. So if you are thinking about removing cabinets and/or painting cabinets, I say go for it!

Looks so good Leigh! I just did this in my own kitchen and while it was a lot of work, I don’t regret it a bit 😍. I also used the BM Advance line and think that made a huge difference.

Love it! We have these same gross oak cabinets in our kitchen too. We just stained ours navy and added stainless handles. So much better! And, like you said, saved a ton of money on a kitchen redo.
