We have settled in quite well with a simple winter home life routine for each day. And while the weather may be cold outdoors, it’s been fun to add some warmth and realness to the inside of our home.
PILEA BABY!
My pilea plant is doing fantastic in the larger “pot” from last year. {Click HERE to read about that.} It has had a couple off-shoot babies over time and just last week I took the latest one and put it in a little container I found at a thrift store.

LET’S SAIL AWAY…
Growing up, my family would spend a week on the Jersey shore at my grandparents beach house. So many childhood memories are wrapped up in that home. I can recall my grandma hanging suncatchers in the windows of that house. And somehow, I ended up with one of them. Years later, I unearthed it and recently hung it in the window of our school nook.
It brings a smile to my heart every time I look at it.
STAIRCASE REAL LIFE
Last month, I participated in the $100 Room Challenge and gave our basement staircase a makeover. {Click HERE for the before and reveal!} I have been so glad every single day since that this space looks like it does. But…real life has crept in:
I didn’t make sense to hang the mop anywhere else and so, the bright blue mop stands out like a sore thumb. But it’s easily accessible, so it’s worth it.
Also, did you catch our dog’s crate in that first picture? There is just enough room for her crate and food to be tucked away here, all while allowing us room to pass by. We call it “Dixie’s apartment” and it works well for our family. And yes, there is a baby gate right here. No actual babies in our home, but a dog who thinks the basement is her bathroom. So…a baby gate was the solution to keeping her from going down there.
One last thing in the staircase that has changed is on the shelves. The top one has turned into a mason jar storage area. I am constantly using these and needed a close space that wouldn’t be “in the way.” This is working out well as I use them daily for homemade items like yogurt and bone broth.

NEW KITCHEN UTENSILS
It felt like a splurge, but I decided to change out the bright color rubber spatulas and broken spoons for a woods and black palate. This was perfect timing as I added these new kitchen utensils right before my cozy kitchen corner makeover. {Click HERE for that fun project!} It just feels calmer having a less chaotic pile of utensils, so any hesitation of “splurging” is gone now.

BUDGET-FRIENDLY TULIPS
To add a little touch of spring in the midst of our simple winter home life, I picked up a $5 bouquet of tulips at Aldi. I placed them by the front door so they could easily be seen by anyone coming and going.
As the winter {hopefully} prepares to wind down, it has been nice to take the time during our simple winter home life to make a few changes that I have been thinking about. My hope is that little pops of beauty brighten our days, but also that our home functions well for those who live within it’s walls.
