The first step in any room makeover is to declutter, followed by painting. I did just that in this small bedroom makeover and it already looks a million times better.
After a few bedroom changes, my youngest kiddo ended up in this room. We did absolutely nothing to it, but throw all his stuff in here. And it really shows.
I’ve been holding off on this small bedroom makeover for a while because of a few specific reasons. First, he is in the middle school age-range and his “taste” is in the midst of a huge shift. And second, he tends to hoard. I don’t hold that against him as I was the same way at his age.
But I recently convinced him of a few ideas that could make his bedroom function better and work for him. After some thought, he decided the plans sounded good and I set to work.

SMALL BEDROOM MAKEOVER BEFORE
Here is confirmation that we threw him in here, along with furniture, a rug, lots of toys, and curtains thumb-tacked to the window frame.
This built-in enclosed the radiator, as well as added a few bookshelves. He has enjoyed having a window seat, but it wasn’t practical, so…well, you’ll see.
This desk was actually mine growing up. I am still in shock that it survived me and my three kids. Although, at this point, the drawers barely close. But I have a really fun idea in the works that he is going to love.
MAKEOVER IN PROGRESS
After emptying the room of everything but his bedframe and box spring, I set to work on removing the built-in. I knew it was going to be disgusting underneath and it was a main reason I wanted it gone. It was going to be impossible to clean the grime that we had inherited without removing it.
Lucky for me, I found 16 cents as payment for my demo day. Lots of candy wrappers and way too much dust and grossness.
Tucked behind the radiator were the remnants of old wallpaper. It was extremely brittle, but I always enjoy finding clues of the previous owners and home styles throughout the ages.
After a thorough cleaning, this spot was ready for a fresh coat of paint.
I had been tossing around the idea of refinishing the floors in this bedroom before I painted it. After looking at the cost and the fact that there is another bedroom that needs the floors sanded, I decided to hold off. In the end, I am better off doing both bedrooms at the same time. There isn’t a date set for that, but maybe next summer while they are both at camp.

SMALL BEDROOM MAKEOVER AFTER
A few coats of paint later and the room feels like a clean slate. I am looking forward to adding all the fun touches, but for now, we can actually move around in this room and that is enough.
Walls are Behr Swiss Coffee in flat and trim is Behr base white in satin.
These after pictures have me really giddy. I’ve got some things ordered for the next step in this small bedroom makeover and it was fun to work with him on those ideas.
Do you have any ideas or suggestions on keeping a kiddo’s bedroom organized?
