Add some style and comfort to a room makeover with a simple teen boy bedroom rug to pull the room together.
Last month, I shared my teen son’s bedroom makeover. {Click HERE for that post.} It was a big change made over the course of a few days, a couple gallons of paint, and a few new functional pieces. This teen boy bedroom came a long way at that time, but it wasn’t quite done yet.
I ordered a rug soon after the makeover was complete and I was told that it was on back order for 2 months. We had to decide at that time if it was worth the wait. I let him decide and he said yes. I agreed. Mostly because there were no other rugs out of there that received in a tiny smidgen of approval from him.

Turns out that a surprise awaited us a few days before Christmas: our teen boy bedroom rug arrived an entire month early! Woohoo!
{I originally shared his and many more rugs in a entire post of my favorite rugs…click HERE.}
Immediately, we got it all set up in his room and instantly, the floors and the room felt warmer. I love the rug. Now all the gray in his room…well, that’s another story…
And another project…for another day.
RUG / CURTAINS / WALL SCONCE / CURTAIN ROD
Earlier this fall, I did pick up a bed frame at a yard sale for his bedroom. The plan is to get him into a queen-size bed as soon as the budget allows for a new mattress set.
Once he has a new bed, I will get this teen boy bedroom new bedding as well. I promise that it will not be gray, but will definitely pull in the rug tones.
There are also big plans for this corner as well. For now, I gave him my cozy chair for his corner and he has a desk that he is quickly outgrowing. The plan is to add an L-shaped built in desk and shelves in this corner. This is based upon his personality and I cannot wait until we can tackle this project for him.
I absolutely adore the subtle colors in this rug. And the tribal-type symbols definitely feel more masculine than all the floral rugs I typically see online. His opinion is on the fence still. He enjoys having the warmth and feel of a rug in his bedroom, but still isn’t quite convinced that the colors aren’t “too much.”
I promise that he is “cool” with it though…but would probably prefer a gray rug. Lol!
What do you think? Can his room pull of this rug? And what color should I go with for his bedding to tie the rug and curtains in together?

LOVE the rug! You are so right – the tribal shapes add color without being flowery and maintain a masculine look to the room. Well done! I’d try to talk him into a deep burgundy bed set with some olive throw pillows 😉
Hope your holiday was lovely!! =)

I love that color scheme, Heather! He may go with the olive, but the burgundy is what is troubling him. 😉 Happy New Year! ♥

Love your sons room! The rug is great and I trust he will soon embrace it! You did good!

Thank you! I think he’ll come around…he’s 15 so it kind of goes with the territory right now. 😉

I think it’s a perfect choice….I like that it’s subtle. Perhaps the blue shade in the rug would work for him. It would go with the gray curtains yet keep the room light in color. And blue is a boys color!

Yes, you are so right. Need to pull out another color from there that is boy-ish…and ignore the maroon. 😉

I love the rug, and agree with others that blues would work. I definitely see a lighter blue in the rug, and seeing the photo with the desk and chair, I think the darker blue of the chair looks good, even if that exact color isn’t in the rug. It still works! Maybe even a denim (like a stonewashed or antique denim look)that would have a little more texture than just a solid navy. After all, denim jeans look good with lots of colors, and would definitely look masculine with kind of vintage vibe😊

I love the rug’ and it looks good with the grey as well! If he loves the grey, Then that’s a win! Maybe switching the bedskirt out to match the comforter will go good too! Grey or tan bedding would definitely leave it with a masculine feel. I didn’t notice Olive in the picture but see you mentioned that; if it’s in the rug, that would look great too! Excited to see what you end up with. Great Job mama!!

Aww, thank you! Love these suggestions. Once I get his new bed in here, we’ll be able to decide on new bedding. Definitely need to consider masculine colors though. 😉

I just realized I replied to a comment instead of just posting my comment, lol! So in case you didn’t see it, my vote for bedding would be denim, in a stone washed or antique finish for a worn vintage look. After all, jeans look great with lots of colors and it would definitely be masculine.
