By using key pieces, a teen girl bedroom makeover can bring all the elements of a room together. And it can be done on a budget with a bit of creativity.
Ever since I shared the initial reveal of my daughter’s bedroom, we’ve been working on adding a cozy cottage feel to it. I am so excited to share our progress in this teen girl bedroom makeover. {Missed the post about building this room? Click HERE for the dramatic transformation.}
The first thing we decided upon was a rug. I set her in front of the RugsUSA website and let her search to her heart’s content. She narrowed it down to about 10 and we talked through all of those options and I let her have the final say. {I did share her rug choice and a bunch of others that have become my favorite in a post…click HERE!}

Her rug choice set the stage for the rest of the color scheme and actually, the tone of her entire bedroom. I wasn’t too surprised that she gravitated towards soft muted tones. A cozy cottage bedroom with creams, brass, warm woods, soft gray, and a subtle pop of French provincial blue rounded out this teen girl bedroom makeover.
COZY COTTAGE MEETS SIMPLE ELEGANCE
This room gets the most beautiful morning sunshine. To soften the feel of the room, I added my favorite room darkening curtains. {I also used them in my teen boy’s bedroom makeover, just in a different color…click HERE for that fun makeover.}
James recently installed a heater below the window, which is very much needed now.
BEDROOM MAKEOVER DETAILS
We added a swinging wall sconce for her evening and morning reading sessions. {Click HERE for this sconce…but please know that I spray painted the entire thing in a bronze gold and that is why it will look different.}
Do you recognize this stool? It was in here for the first reveal, but I decided to give it a fresh look with spray paint. It really warms up the space now.
These two bookshelves have been with us a long time. Like most of her life. My mom gave them to us when I was in need of bookshelves in our very first home. They aren’t anything special, but I have always found a use for them over the years. They’ve been in a few homes and a few different bedrooms and now they’ve landed in this teen girl bedroom makeover.
However, they had seen better days. I was able to work with Country Chic Paint on this project and using their colors Crinoline and Lazy Linen (for a subtle pop of color in the back of the books) these two bookshelves have been given new life. {Click HERE for their amazing paints.}
It simply took two coats of paint and three layers of their top coat on these bookshelves .
I also used Country Chic Paint on this dresser. It had previously been in her brother’s tween bedroom {click HERE for the before}. The previous color had a masculine feel. And after picking out this rug, we knew that the color “Elegance” would be the perfect compliment. And pop of color.
FUNCTIONAL BEAUTY IN A TEEN BEDROOM
In trying to bring a little order to my artistic girl, we worked on organizing all the things. The truth is that it won’t last, but it was nice for these photos. Ha!
This rocking chair had been passed down to me from my mom when I was pregnant with my daughter. It had belonged to my grandmother before it was given to my mom. And my daughter prefers it over any cushy armchair. She even recently recovered it all by herself.
This mirror was picked up at a local estate sale. It was painted the same “Lazy Linen” as the back of her bookshelves. {See above!}
This teen girl bedroom makeover came together so perfectly. She absolutely adores this room of hers and I love to see her living, loving, and creating in it.

I love this room and the feel of it! Thanks for sharing 😀
Thank you so much, Sue! It is becoming a favorite for me too.
Are the curtains sour cream or tan?
These are “sour cream.” I have them in our living room too.
The room is beautiful! I especially love the look of the stool used as a night stand.
Thank you, Jennifer. I love that stool and wanted to keep using it and this was the perfect solution.
A great choice of rug…..love it! I love the color of the dresser and the muted shade of gold that you used. My first thought when I saw the bookshelves was how cozy it would be to have the shelves face each other somewhere with a cozy chair between them like a reading nook. But she probably prefers to read on the bed. Some great natural light too! She did good!
She does prefer her bed. I offered a cozy chair, but she chose the rocking chair instead. She loves an open floor, so the furniture arrangement was figured out with that in mind. Hoping that someday she’ll have some built-in shelves.
Goodness, Leigh, this room is an absolute refuge! When I think about all of the effort that each family member put into making it “just right” I honestly get teary eyes! I truly love it ALL but my favorite part is her desk – it welcomes her creativity. [sigh!] 💕
Oh, Sharon. Thank you for this encouragement. It was so wonderful to see her daddy and brothers working so hard on this room. She absolutely appreciates it every day. Ah, the desk…I think it’s her favorite too. ♥
Such a lovely space! It has such a calm and relaxed feel. I love the whole space, but I’m partial to the blue painted dresser.
Thank you, Vicki. I love how the dresser turned out too. The color completely calmed down the room.
You did such a great job on this beautiful teen room! Love everything about it and all the cottage style details!
Thanks for sharing this beautiful room!
We had a very similar floor plan and had the problem of not having a closet. I did not notice a closet/space for hanging clothing. What have you used for a solution for this?
Warmly.
Stephanie,
There is a closet in this room, but I “skipped over it” for this blog post because it’s still a work in progress. Check out this post for a peek at it: https://www.thelittlebylittlehome.com/diy-bedroom-renovation-project/
I am truly be blow away by what your family had accomplished together! I love it!! Our family works together also on house and service projects; hard work and serving together makes for great memories that last! Keep up the amazing work!!
Thank you so much, Genevieve! Her excitement over all the details was so fun to work with. ♥
